About the Virginia Studies SOL
(4th Grade Only)
The Virginia Studies SOL focuses on dates, people, locations, and documents from the first colonists to America through the 20th Century.
Timelines
- Ask your student to talk you through the timeline of things they have learned this year.
- Do they remember dates, times, or locations? Do they remember the people involved or the details and documents that go with it?
People & Historical Documents
- Do they know who important people from history are and what their contributions were?
- Can they summarize a document and tell you why it was important? Who wrote it? Why did they write it?
Brain Dumps
- Students use “brain dumps” in class as a place to write down any and all information they remember about a topic right before they begin a test. Students will have blank paper for their SOL assessment that they can use to “dump” all the information they can remember about Virginia Studies onto. This can include names, dates, diagrams, models, drawings, etc.
- Practice at home with your student by having them make a Brain Dump and explain what they added to it.
