Huntington Middle School: The Next Chapter

The proud history of Huntington High School and Huntington Middle School will continue with the construction of a new 600-student middle school, anticipated to open during the 2026-2027 school year.

The new middle school is part of the city’s Southeast Community Resource Area that is set to include a public library and community center, as well as sports and recreation features.

Construction Progress Update

January 20, 2026

The Huntington Middle School building site is divided into four (4) building zones, A, B, C, and D. MEB General Contractors, Inc, the Contractor, is developing the building pad in the order of zones C, D, B, and A. The work completed in these building zones are as follows:

Building Zones

Zone “C”

  • Roofing on remainder of area C low roof(s), i.e., entry way, staff dining, locker rooms, main corridor are approximately 90% complete.
  • Continue overhead mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins are approximately 85% complete.
  • Installation of overhead sprinkler piping is approximately 90% complete.
  • Roofing over metal stud framing for gym exterior parapets and overhang is approximately 90% complete.
  • Installation of roof deck over main corridor is approximately 90% complete.
  • Installation of CMU walls in locker room are complete.

Zone “D”

  • Roof over kitchen cafeteria area is approximately 95% complete.
  • Continue installation of overhead mechanical, electrical, & plumbing rough-ins are approximately 65% complete.
  • Brick veneer is approximately 30% complete on plan W wall (28th street).
  • The Dominion Energy transformer pad was placed on December 29, 2025.
  • Installation of interior CMU non-load bearing partition walls on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors are complete.
  • Framing exterior metal stud walls are approximately 90% complete.
  • Exterior sheathing is approximately 80% complete.
  • Air barrier is approximately 60% complete.
  • Roof deck is approximately 90% complete.
  • In wall MEP rough-ins are approximately 50% complete over all three floors.

Zone “B”

  • Structural steel erection of area “B” is approximately 90% complete.
  • Roof Joists over area “B” are approximately 80% complete.
  • Installation of slab-on-deck on 2nd floor is approximately 50% complete.
  • Exterior wall framing and sheathing are approximately 35% complete.
  • Installation of 1st floor ductwork is 35% complete.
  • Remaining 2nd floor slab-on-deck was placed on 1/7/2026.

Zone “A”

  • Structural steel framing of the entrance vestibule and main corridor is approximately 90% complete.
  • Setting Roof Joists over area “A” are approximately 60% complete.

Field House

  • Complete installation of interior CMU block walls.
  • In wall plumbing and electrical rough-ins are complete.

Utilities

  • Storm water installations are complete across and down 30th Street. On-site storm water piping is approximately 55% complete.
  • Water: Newport News Waterworks currently reviewing design drawings for compliance with their criteria and coordinating with MEB Contractors. Water lines have been installed from the building to the detector check and FDC and are pending the waterworks design prior to continuation.
  • Electrical: Dominion Energy transformer is in Richmond, VA and the site is being prepped for delivery by mid-December.
  • Gas: Meter locations have been provided for the owner and confirmed by the design team. The City of Newport News has submitted a work order and application to Virginia Natural Gas. VNG has confirmed the meter location and is scheduling a contractor for the gas line install across Wickham to the meter location (installation TBD).

Overall Completion

  • Overall Completion is 50% complete.
