Alternative Assessments

Alternative Assessments

The NNPS Science curriculum includes Performance Assessments (K-5) and Local Alternative Assessments (3rd grade only) to summatively assess students in each unit of study.

For specific information about Performance Assessments and Local Alternative Assessments, please visit the Virginia Department of Education website.

NNPS uses a balanced assessment model, which include diagnostic, summative, and formative assessments.

Student assessments play a vital role in the teaching and learning process. Teachers collect data through:

  • Checks for understanding
  • Anecdotal notes
  • Formative assessments
  • Performance Assessment
  • Unit tests/Common assessments
  • Benchmarks
  • SOLs

Benchmark assessments, common assessments, and SOL tests are administered online with students getting appropriate scaffolds and accommodations.

Performance assessments can be completed during or after a unit as a summative assessment. These assessments use project-based learning and student voice and choice for each student to share their mastery of the content in ways that feel most comfortable to them with appropriate direction, choice, scaffolds, and assistance from their teacher and various resources.
