WARWICK HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM WINNERS

(October 27, 2008) -- Warwick High School congratulates the WHS speech team for successes in recent competitions.

On October 9 at Ocean Lakes High School, the WHS speech team competed in the first tournament of the competitive year. Senior Raymond George placed 3rd in extemporaneous speaking. Junior Michael Jordan placed 3rd in impromptu speaking, while junior Kasey Sease won 5th. Freshman Tyla Morris placed 3rd in junior varsity poetry. Warwick finished 6th out of 19 schools entered into competition.

On October 14, the team placed 3rd overall in the Peninsula Forensics League first tournament of the school year hosted by Poquoson. Senior Mia Wilson-Olavarria placed 1st in duo interpretation. Junior Kasey Sease placed 3rd in impromptu speaking. Freshman Tyla Morris placed 1st in poetry.

On October 17, the team competed at Poquoson High School and on October 18, 2008 at Kellam High School. The team placed second overall at Poquoson. The following students placed individually:
• Kasey Sease, Junior: Varsity Lincoln-Douglas, first place at Poquoson and second place at Kellam
• Michael Jordan, Junior: Varsity Lincoln-Douglas, fifth place at Kellam
• Chris Middleton, Freshman: Novice Lincoln-Douglas, fourth place Poquoson
• Chelsea Parker, Freshman and Brian McKiver, Sophomore: Policy Debate placed third at Poquoson
• Chelsea Parker, Freshman: Policy Debate, third place Individual Speaker at Poquoson

Next, the team competed at the Fourth Annual Pamela Waldher Speech and Debate Tournament October 25 at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, NC.

The following students received awards:
• Kasey Sease – Junior – 2nd place Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate
• Michael Jordan – Junior – 6th place Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate
• Mia Wilson-Olavarria – Senior - 3rd place Duo Interpretation

Although she did not receive an award, freshman Chelsea Parker was recognized as the 8th place Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate Speaker. Junior Kasey Sease was recognized as the TOP Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate Speaker. She was ranked number two because of her win-loss record, but had more speaker points overall out of the 17 people in her division.

This was Warwick High School's second time competing in the tournament. The last time they competed was in January 2007. At that event, Michael Jordan also competed and placed. Warwick was one of two schools from the entire state of Virginia. There were eighteen schools competing in the tournament

The WHS Program is four-time district speech champions and two-time district debate champions. The team is coached by Spanish, AVID, and Debate teacher Deon Garner. Garner is the 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year for Warwick High.

The team has several upcoming competitions. On November 6, 2008 Warwick will host and compete in the Tidewater Forensics Competition. On November 7, 2008 they will compete in the Peninsula Debate League Tournament at Gloucester High School. On November 8, 2008 Warwick will be at Patrick Henry High School in Richmond for the Catholic Forensics League Tournament.
